Google Business Profile checklist for Melbourne businesses (2026)

The full 12-step Google Business Profile checklist I work through with every Melbourne client. Get your map pack listing right and you will see leads inside two weeks.

Google Business Profile checklist - blog cover

Most Melbourne businesses I audit have a Google Business Profile that is half-filled out and quietly losing them customers every day. The map pack at the top of every “near me” search is where local revenue lives in 2026. Get this right and you will see leads inside two weeks. Get it wrong and even strong SEO on your website will not save you.

This is the checklist I work through with every new local client. Twelve steps. Most take under five minutes. The whole thing usually takes a couple of hours over a weekend.

1. Claim and verify the profile

Sign in at business.google.com with the email you actually use for business. Google now offers video verification for most Australian small business categories, which is much faster than the old postcard method. Have your storefront, signage or a recent invoice ready to film. The whole process takes 5 minutes and Google usually approves inside 24 hours.

If your profile is already verified but you cannot access it, use the “Request ownership” flow. Whoever set it up originally has 7 days to respond before you can claim it back.

2. Pick the right primary category

This is the single biggest lever in the map pack. Your primary category tells Google what searches you should appear for. Choose the most specific category that matches the bulk of your revenue, not the broadest one.

  • Wrong: “Restaurant” if you actually run a cafe.
  • Right: “Cafe” if breakfast and coffee are most of your revenue.
  • Wrong: “Web designer” if 80% of your billing is SEO retainers.
  • Right: “Search engine optimisation agency” or “Internet marketing service”.

You can add up to 9 secondary categories. Use them. List every legitimate service you offer. But your primary category is what Google trusts most, so pick it carefully.

3. Set your service area honestly

If customers come to your premises, list your full street address and Google will show your business on the map. If you travel to customers (tradies, mobile services), set up as a service-area business and list the Melbourne suburbs you genuinely cover.

Listing 30 suburbs you do not actually service is a fast way to get reviews complaining about “they did not come to us” which then damages your ranking. Stick to the areas you can realistically reach within 45 minutes.

4. Fill out every field, including the boring ones

Google rewards profile completeness. Skip nothing.

  • Hours of operation, including public holidays and seasonal changes
  • Website URL pointing to your main domain, not a Linktree
  • Phone number that connects to a human in business hours
  • Appointment booking link if relevant
  • Menu link or services list with prices where you can
  • Year established and number of employees
  • Accessibility, payment methods, amenities

Each field you complete adds a small ranking signal. Together they add up to a lot.

5. Upload at least 10 real photos

Profiles with 10 or more photos consistently rank higher than profiles with 2. Upload:

  • Exterior shot of your premises with signage visible
  • Interior of the space
  • Team photos with names where comfortable
  • Real examples of your work or product
  • One or two behind the scenes shots

Phone camera quality is fine. Avoid stock images at all costs. Google’s algorithms now detect generic stock photos and discount them.

6. Write the business description properly

You get 750 characters. Use them. Lead with what you do, who you do it for, and which Melbourne area you serve. Keep it human, not a wall of keywords.

A bad description: “We are the best Melbourne cafe with the best coffee for all your morning needs.”

A good description: “Family-run cafe on Swan Street in Richmond, open since 2019. We roast our own beans in Cremorne, serve all-day breakfast and host the local cycling crew most weekends. Walk-ins welcome. Dog friendly out the back.”

The good version names the suburb, the street, the years in business and a real detail. Google understands every one of those signals.

7. Add your products or services with real pricing

This shows up directly in the map pack and on your profile. Customers love it because they get an answer without leaving the search results. Google loves it because it is structured data.

List your top 5 to 10 services with names, descriptions and “from” pricing in AUD. Even ranges work. “From $80” is far better than no price at all. Pricing transparency is now a quality signal across Google’s local algorithms.

8. Set up your review acquisition system

Reviews are the single biggest ongoing ranking factor for map pack visibility. You need a sustainable system, not a one-time push.

  • Find your “Get reviews” short link in the Google Business Profile dashboard
  • Save it as a QR code on your phone, receipt, invoice and email signature
  • Ask happy customers in person. Then follow up with a short text message including the link
  • Reply to every review within 48 hours, including the negative ones. Especially the negative ones

Aim for one new review per week. That is more important than a one-off burst of ten. Google sees a steady trickle as authentic and a sudden spike as suspicious.

9. Post weekly using Google Posts

Most Melbourne businesses ignore Google Posts. That is a free traffic gift. Treat it like Instagram for local search.

Once a week, post a short update with a photo and a call to action. New menu item, recent project, special offer, behind the scenes. Anything authentic. Profiles with regular posts rank measurably higher than dormant ones, and your posts appear directly inside the map pack result.

10. Use the Q&A section to seed common questions

Anyone can ask a public question on your profile and anyone can answer. Get ahead of this. Post the 5 questions you actually get asked every week and answer them yourself with the business account. Examples:

  • Do you do home visits in Hawthorn?
  • Do you take walk-ins?
  • Can I bring my dog?
  • Do you offer payment plans?
  • What is your turnaround time?

This pre-emptive Q&A section gets indexed by Google and surfaces in search results when people ask the same questions on Google itself. Free, fast, easy.

11. Track your profile insights monthly

Google gives you a free analytics dashboard in your profile. Check the following each month:

  • Total search views and how they break down between branded and discovery
  • Top searches that triggered your profile
  • Direction requests and phone calls (real intent signals)
  • Photo views compared to your competitors

Set a monthly reminder. Five minutes of looking at insights will tell you which posts and photos work, what people are searching for to find you, and where you sit against the nearest 5 competitors.

12. Audit yourself against the top 3 competitors every quarter

Once a quarter, search Google for the 3 main keywords your customers use. Look at the top 3 results in the map pack and compare your profile to theirs.

  • How many reviews do they have? What is the average rating?
  • How many photos? How recent?
  • What categories are they using?
  • How are they describing their business?

Steal what works. Ignore what is just busy work.

What to expect after you complete the checklist

Most Melbourne businesses see profile views double inside the first month after a full optimisation. Phone calls and direction requests follow a few weeks later. Reviews are the slow burn. They compound over months, but every new review nudges you higher in the local map pack.

If you want a hand working through this for your specific suburb, see my digital marketing services page or run a self-serve audit on the free SEO Audit Tool. Or just get in touch and we can chat through it on a 30-minute call.
