Every week a new AI tool launches and promises to revolutionise your small business. Most do not. Some genuinely save time. This is a short, opinionated list of free AI tools that actually deliver value for a typical Australian small business in 2026, with notes on what each one is best at and what to skip.
For job applications
Tailored Resume Assistant
I built this one specifically for Australian job seekers. Paste your current resume, paste the job description and the tool rewrites your resume to match the role. For SEO and website health
SEO Audit Tool
Also one I built. Sign in with your email and the tool runs a full technical and on-page SEO audit on any website. It covers TLS, DNS, security headers, indexability, headings, schema markup and the internal link graph. The output is a permanent public HTML report you can share with clients or save for reference. Google Search Console
Not strictly an AI tool, but it now uses machine learning under the hood to flag content issues, suggest improvements and forecast traffic changes. Free. If you only set up one tool from this list, set this one up. It tells you exactly what Google sees on your site and what is breaking.
For content writing
ChatGPT (free tier)
Best used as a brainstorming partner, not a finished writer. Strong on outlines, first drafts, rephrasing in different tones, summarising long documents and translating between Australian and US English. Weak at facts about local context. Always check anything specific to Australia, Melbourne or your industry. The free tier handles most small business use cases without upgrading.
Claude (free tier)
Anthropic’s Claude is excellent at long-form writing, document review and matching a specific brand voice. The free tier is generous for small business use. I tend to use Claude for client proposals and detailed content drafts, and ChatGPT for quick rephrasing or ideation.
For images and visuals
Microsoft Designer
Free, surprisingly polished AI image and graphic generator. Best for social media posts, simple ad creative and presentation visuals. Outputs feel less generic than the typical Midjourney or DALL-E results, particularly for typography-heavy designs.
Canva (free tier with AI features)
Most Australian small businesses already use Canva. The free tier now includes a basic image generator, background remover and Magic Resize. Plenty for social, simple marketing materials and quick mock-ups. Skip the paid AI tier unless you are generating dozens of images a week.
For meetings and admin
tl;dv or Otter (free tiers)
Both record and transcribe meetings, then generate summaries and action items. Free tiers cover small business volumes. tl;dv integrates better with Google Meet and Zoom, Otter is stronger for transcription accuracy. Pick one and stick with it.
Google Workspace AI features
If you already pay for Google Workspace, the Gemini features now bundled in are worth turning on. Useful in Gmail for drafting replies, in Docs for summarising long documents and in Sheets for explaining formulas. Free at the basic tier of Workspace.
What to skip in 2026
- AI-only SEO writers that promise ranking content with zero human input. Google has gotten very good at detecting unedited AI output.
- “AI sales agents” that promise to close deals for you. They do not, yet.
- Paid AI tools that wrap a ChatGPT API call in a thin UI. You can usually do the same thing in ChatGPT directly for free.
- AI chatbots on your website if you cannot maintain them. A bad chatbot is worse than no chatbot.
The one habit that matters more than any tool
None of these tools matter if you do not use them weekly. Pick two from this list, integrate them into your normal workflow and ignore the rest until you have a real reason to add one. Tool fatigue is a real cost for a small business owner. The goal is leverage, not collection.
